The increase in hiring in the Information Technology (IT) segment due to increased demand in the networking, cybersecurity, cloud connectivity and data science spaces has seen a strong offering of pre- placement (PPO) and internships for students of the Birla Institute of Technological Sciences (BITS)) Campus of Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa this year.

The 2021 pre-placement hiring season started this month and all 3 BITS campuses received PPOs from companies such as Microsoft, DE Shaw, Google, Uber, Cisco, Adobe, Salesforce, Amazon, ServiceNow, Oracle and Flipkart in the IT segment, all of which have been aggressively hired, according to Balasubramanian Gurumurthy, chief investment officer, BITS Pilani.

The general industry trend is expected to be similar, with the IT industry looking to aggressively hire this year despite the pandemic.

Mr Balasubramaniam said positive vibes are being seen across all industries as even chip makers such as Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Micron and Western Digital were also in the midst of hiring waves and brought in large numbers of students for summer internships, with a high PPO conversion rate.

The FMCG industry has seen Hindustan Unilever and Mondelez hire interns on campus, with Exxon Mobil and Honeywell also offering offers for major mechanical and chemical profiles. The season also saw Wells Fargo, WorldQuant, MX Player, Citrix, Standard Chartered, Myntra, PhonePe and Barclays hire for summer internships and expand PPOs for the first time at BITS Pilani campuses.

In total, 497 students were able to obtain the opportunity to carry out a summer internship in various companies, of which 357 students (71.83%) obtained a full-time offer from their company. This marks an exponential jump in summer internship offers and final job offers received during the 2021 hiring season, in which 409 students obtained summer internships and 287 PPOs.

He said there was an increase in PPOs by a number of companies. For example, Microsoft hired 52 to 48, ServiceNow hired 25 to 4, Oracle hired 44 to 19, Walmart Labs hired 33 to 29, and Micron hired 11 to 5, Flipkart hired 13 to 7 for the 2022 class. on 2021 respectively.

The average salary also grew by 6.2% to 28.99 lakh per year from 26.29 lakh the previous year on the PPO summer internship and the maximum salary remained about the same at around 45. lakh.

There is also a massive increase in the number of hosted businesses, with 87 hosted businesses compared to 46 last year, a variation of 89.13% over the same period. As a result, the number of placed students also saw a huge increase of 65.25% (975 for 2022 versus 590 for 2021 in the second week of September).

The electronics sector has also seen aggressive hiring, with Qualcomm making 79 offers, Western Digital making 35 offers, Texas Instruments making 23 offers and Mediatek making 45 offers this year across all three Indian campuses.
