Nearly 50,000 Stokies receive £150 council tax rebate as thousands more wait

Almost 50,000 households in Stoke-on-Trent have now received their £150 council tax refund as thousands more patiently await payment. Stoke-on-Trent City Council has confirmed a total of 49,403 rebates were paid to the Potteries.
However, those who have not yet received the money in their bank accounts are reassured that the money will be with them soon.
Anyone living in real estate valued in housing tax brackets A to D as their sole or main residence will be eligible for the non-refundable discount. In Stoke-on-Trent, this includes 98% of households.

A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: “Our team have already processed 49,403 remittances which have since been paid out to residents. A further 19,000 remittances were processed on Friday and payments are expected to reach residents’ accounts by Wednesday, May 4.
“Our team is still working on a number of direct debit payments and these will be processed shortly.
“For non-direct debit payers, residents will receive a letter delivered to their home if they are eligible for reimbursement. This will detail how to request your reimbursement and direct you to a form to complete.”
Refunds were due from April 1 and no later than September 30, but the date you receive your money may depend on where you live. To be eligible, households must have lived in the property as their sole or principal residence on April 1.
Assistance for people living in larger properties – in bands E to H – is available for those receiving municipal tax assistance or for those receiving an exemption or rebate. This will also be paid automatically into bank accounts or by postal cheque.
People living in multiple occupancy households (HMOs) or those who moved into their current home after April 1 may also be eligible for assistance under discretionary funding. Funding details and application information will be announced in May. Payment will not be made on empty homes, second homes or non-resident owners.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council is also reminding people to beware of cold callers trying to scam money using the £150 discount.
A spokesperson added: “We are aware of a scam relating to fraudulent phone calls made to residents regarding reimbursement. If we contact you by phone, it will only be to discuss matters on your account and we will not We will NEVER ask you for your full bank details.”
